“MESH UP”

One major sports trend that also has a high potential to become a major trend in the junior market is the heavyhanded use of mesh on the Spring 2012 runwayS. The airy and sporty material directly translates to athleticism, youthfulness, and movement, making this the perfect sport interpretation.

Among the collections, I saw multiple interpretations of this trend ranging from literal usage to lightweight open-weave knitwear, to leather with laser cut-out pattern, and as a printed pattern in the relaunched Kenzo collection (those visors are a surefire Spring IT item). I love the fact that designers found ways to inject fashion into this overtly sporty look. For example, Alexander Wang‘s mesh pockets seem fun and actually practical while Stella McCartney‘s mesh panels injected her signature sexiness into the collection. Another standout twist is to make exaggerated open weave sweaters to resemble mesh, the easiness is perfect for spring and captures a bit of last season’s grunge vibe.

Sheer has been a big Spring trend for a few years now and the mesh is definitely this season’s version. It’s see-through but provides texture and I love how different sizes and materials of mesh convey completely different vibes making this a very versatile trend. Versatility is always a good indicator of a brewing big trend. It gives the possibility of smaller brands to come up with their own version while referencing the runway. And this sporty material is destined to be a big hit at the junior market and I predict it will mostly be used as panels and pockets, and the mesh dress will also be a big hit with the more daring youngsters.

I expect to see editors like Kate Lanphear and Lawren Howell creating fun editorials for Elle andTeen Vogue respectively and won’t be surprised to see some of this element translated into more imaginative evening wear.
