Color Blocking

Let's kick off the Top 10 Trends for Spring 2012 with Color Blocking! Ready, set, go...this trend made it's way into our closets in 2011, and it is not going anywhere in 2012. Some of you may be asking yourself, what exactly is "color blocking". So, here’s my little rundown...

Color blocking is just that, wearing blocks of colors. For the most part this is what we do when we get dressed each day, but Spring 2012 “color blocking” is somewhat exaggerated. To get the look you want to go for bright and bold colors. There are some rules to follow, however, and here they are:

LOUDER THE BETTER: If there has never been a time to wear loud pops of color, like Pepto pink, it’s now. You can show off colors in subtle ways with belts, shoes and other accessories. Take advantage of the opportunity to be loud for no reason and still be stunningly fab!

DON'T BE SCARED: We’re so used to the same coordinating colors...try mixing pink and red. Try orange and green. If you’re hesitant, you can always stick to the old faithful color wheel (see below). You can't mess up when using the wheel!

K.I.S.S.: Keep It Simple Sister! This look works best with simple, neutral accessories. Metallic shades are a great compliment to color blocking. Just don't go overboard.

THREE'S COMPANY: Stick to 2 or 3 colors max. Any more than that and you may start to look like Rainbow Bright, and she's only allowed in Halloween costumes .

If you are ever in doubt, you can always use the old trusty color wheel. Just draw a line straight through the middle of the wheel from one side to the other. This is how you identify which colors traditionally compliment each other.

If you are a little unsure about color blocking tops and bottoms together by your lonesome, you can go to just about any store and pick up a dress that looks as though it's a separate top and bottom.
