Safari chic

Just in case bare midriffs weren’t wild enough for you, get ready to take a safari through the African terrains. The one exception is that couture is ALWAYS allowed.

Safari chic inspired Spring 2012 RTW collections for many designers, but most specifically Michael Kors. The traditional animal prints took on new variations incorporating tie die and richer fabrics to create sarongs, caftans and sleek silhouettes. Collectively, each designers pieces came together to create a fresh twist on a timeless classic.

We’ve seen leopard hold strong throughout this past year, but designers have taken the safari animal to new heights by including exotic zebra-like prints seen by Peter Som, Giambattista Valli and Proenza Schouler. This bold and sexy animal transformed into a print screams fashion moment.

Styling Tip:
Safari works for both men and women. Women, do not mix multiple prints in multiple colors. (For example, black & white zebra with camel colored leopard). Michael Kors has captured the literal interpretation of the classic luxury to wear simple, clean and sophisticated Safari. Maintain the minimalism of the look by choosing pieces in ivories, lucid greens, tans, and traditional black & white.
Men and women, don’t go for pieces that are overly baggy. For women, if you choose a loose piece, remember to accentuate your waist with a belt.

Shoppers Guide:
I would say it's okay to splurge on items following this runway trend because they will be in your closet forever. If you go with a more traditional Safari look like Michael Kors has embodied, choose a chic button down or a flowy sarong. The G.Valli zebra print dress is absolutely amazing and totally worth the money. You can't go wrong.
