The trench coat - a must have!

The trench coat is a descendant of the heavy serge coats worn by French and British soldiers in World War 1. The trench coat was invented by Thomas Burberry (he also invented the gabardine fabric), who submitted a design for an army officer's raincoat to the war office of the UK in 1901.

Burberry's raincoat subsequently became part of the service uniform of British officers. During WWI, the design was modified to include D-rings and shoulder straps. The latter material looks like leather and was dubbed "trench coat" by the soldiers in the trenches. Many veterans returning to civilian life kept their coats and they became fashionable for both men and women. Towards the end of WWII, the trenchcoat became part of all enlisted men's and officers' kits in the armed forces of many countries.

Now a must-have in a stylista´s wardrobe, this double-breasted coat has an element of class and elegance. Trench coat is perennially classic and invariably flattering. “Put on a trench, you´re suddenly Audrey Hepburn walking along the Seine, even if you´ve got red hair and you´re five-one.” Take that from a renowned designer, Michael Kors.

There are lots of options available for a modern woman in choosing a trench coat. No longer are they limited to black, khaki and navy blue, they now come in various vibrant colors and in beige or white. In fact, there are just too many options when it comes to colors and interpretation that picking up the right one can be overwhelming. But remember, the trench that makes your heart beat fast and that fits right, is more likely meant for you.

That said, here are 3 outfit ideas on wearing a trench coat.

Elegant and Attractive

A trench that hits around the knee or below the knee have elegance quality. They´re also more versatile. Charlize Theron is seen here wearing a very stylish double-breasted trench in beige color brightened up with a peek of blue tank and yellow heels. Keep those colors stand out by wearing a white or beige scarf, and keep your strides long for an ultimate elegant and confident look.

Laidback yet Smart

Dress up casually and smartly on cold days with a trench coat. A trench that hits above the knee is great to team up with your washed blue skinny jeans in riding boots. Brown boots create a lighter mood and they don´t clash heavily with your beige or white trench coat, so I found them a better option than black boots to go with your light trench. Kate Hudson is seen here strolling the streets of New York casually smart.

Girly and Sleek

When it comes to the rule of lengths and hems, Demi Moore knows her game. Wrapped in a beautiful beige trench, she looked very sophisticated with that glint of green satin dress around the hems. To ge this look, wear a dress an inch longer that your trench or vice-versa. To keep things interesting, go for a colorful or printed dress an inch longer than your beige or white trench. If your trench is colored, then opt for a neutral colored dress.

So tell me Creative fashionistas, are you a trench coat girl? How do you style a trench and what colors do you prefer to wear?
